The #366Duraznos initiative by Wa’ik is a unique cultural and linguistic project that aims to explore and celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity by translating the word «peach» into 366 different languages, one for each day of the year. This initiative not only focuses on the word itself but also on the cultural, historical, and gastronomical contexts associated with each language and region.

Project Objectives:

  1. Promote Linguistic Diversity:

    • Highlight the richness and variety of languages spoken around the world, showing how a simple concept can have multiple expressions.
  2. Foster Cultural Exchange:

    • Facilitate a greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures, traditions, and ways of life through the word «peach.»
  3. Educate and Raise Awareness:

    • Provide educational information about lesser-known languages and the cultures of the people who speak them, creating awareness about the importance of preserving and valuing this diversity.

Methodology:

  1. Daily Research:

    • Each day, a language is selected, and the word for «peach» in that language is researched. Additionally, interesting facts about the culture, history, and linguistic peculiarities of the region or community that speaks the language are shared.
  2. Social Media Outreach:

    • Using the hashtag #366Duraznos, the translations and cultural facts are posted on social media platforms, inviting a global audience to participate, comment, and learn.
  3. Visual and Artistic Content:

    • The posts may include images, illustrations, and artworks related to peaches, as well as photographs of cultural events or local traditions involving this fruit.

Momo in Japan /

Momo prefectures

We are exploring peaches in Japan! Peaches are very big, precious and cherished in Japan, especially during their season of spring and summer as a source of water and natural sweetness. Along with our research of peaches in 366 languages, we have travelled to Japan to truly understand peaches in Japan.

We participated in the FoodEx Japan, where we met producers, manufacturers and retailers of peaches from the prefectures of to get to know the peach ecosystem Okayama, Yamanashi and Fukushima, the main producers of peaches.

We also visited those prefectures. We first went to Okayama in winter, where we were marveled that the airport is called Momotaro. We also went to Momotaron museum, to understand the tale of Momotaro, the boy who was born from a peach and gave youth to the elderly couple who brough him up. Momotaro defeated evil beings, together with his animal friends. We also Okayama Kibidango, all with peaches in images.

In spring, we visited Yamanashi, when the peaches were growing. There we travelled the prefecture in the look for directly speaking with farmers, and also understanding the crop production together with peaches, grapes, nectarines plumbs and grapes.

In summer, we will go back to Okayama, Yamanashi, and will also visit Fukushima for some more details on the peaches, and interview about the peaches.

We are going to recap all the 366 languages in one video, where all of the native speakers of that language will record their way of saying peach 🙂

Peach is so much more than a color or some fruit. It has shaped cultures, history, geography, climate, agriculture, gastronomy, nutrition, health, peace, trade, geopolitics, economics, diplomacy, symbols, faith and beliefs. We are developing a map how it all is intertwined.
